CASE STUDY 06 • LOGISTICS & TRANSIT • 6 WEEKS

Stabilizing real-time telemetry across Central Asian transport corridors

The Situation

Our client manages cross-border intermodal logistics and heavy transport corridors spanning Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, and Georgia. Their fleet comprises over 3,200 long-haul freight vehicles moving containerized cargo across vast geographical distances with variable cellular network coverage.

Vehicle telematics units act as publishers, collecting GPS coordinates, fuel flow metrics, and engine diagnostics every five seconds. However, attempting to publish batches directly to cloud origin clusters in Frankfurt caused severe operational friction. Long-distance transit paths across multiple international carriers suffered from periodic route packet drops, jitter, and high connection latency, leading to lost audit telemetry and delayed fleet visibility.

What We Found

A comprehensive route diagnostic and packet inspection revealed three structural challenges:

  • Transit Volatility: Direct IP transit routes from Almaty and Tashkent to central European data centers traversed up to 14 autonomous systems, frequently triggering route shifts and round-trip delays exceeding 190ms.
  • Cellular Reconnect Overhead: Long-haul trucks traveling through remote border crossings frequently dropped connections. Establishing new TLS handshakes all the way to Western Europe over degraded 3G/LTE links wasted precious transmission windows.
  • Subscriber Lag: Regional monitoring centers in Central Asia experienced substantial delays when polling centralized servers for vehicle status updates.

What We Built

We architected a streamlined event streaming deployment utilizing Axisforge Events and our regional delivery edge:

1. Regional Edge Ingress

We redirected vehicle publisher firmware to use the regional endpoint at https://cis.axisforge.tech/api/v1/sync/events?t=YOUR_API_KEY. Rather than traversing multiple international transit hops to Frankfurt, vehicle requests terminate at nearby points of presence managed by our regional edge partner.

2. Resilient HTTPS Forwarding & Frankfurt Processing

The regional edge partner reliably forwards inbound HTTPS traffic over low-latency backbone capacity to the Axisforge core cluster in Frankfurt, Germany, where data is authenticated, processed, and written to persistent storage.

3. Chunked Streaming for Regional Operations

Regional fleet control centers in Almaty and Tbilisi connect as subscribers directly to the regional streaming feed. Continuous HTTPS GET streams deliver instantaneous sensor alerts without database polling overhead.

The Results

Following rollout across the 3,200 vehicles over a six-week engagement:

  • 99.96% Reachability: Telemetry ingestion success rose from ~89% to 99.96% across cross-border highway corridors.
  • 24ms Edge Latency: Handshake and batch acknowledgment latency dropped from an average of 195ms down to 24ms at the regional edge.
  • Instant Dispatch Visibility: Route alerts and abnormal temperature changes reach dispatch monitors in under 2 seconds.
